Riots

In July 2024, a stabbing at a children’s dance class in Southport killed three young girls. Although police confirmed the suspect was Welsh and born to Rwandan parents, false online claims linked him to asylum seekers.

These rumours, pushed by far-right groups, sparked violent riots across the UK. Mosques, asylum hotels, and Muslim businesses were attacked and over 100 police officers were injured.

The riots exposed the rift in public attitudes and acceptance of different people’s faiths and cultures in Britain.

Far right attitudes amplified through deliberate misinformation have festered uncontrollably on social media platforms, vilifying and targeting entire communities due to their faith and ethnicity.

British Muslims are navigating life in Britain feeling vulnerable in their places of work, education, online and in public.
